Catamount Institute & Lincoln Elementary Celebrate "No Child Left Inside Day!"
Wednesday, October 01 2008, 8:30am - 2:30pm
It's not very often you hear
teachers telling their students to "GET OUT!" But on October 1st, teachers at
LincolnElementary
school will be sending that message loud
and clear!
Catamount Institute, a nonprofit
organization that inspires ecological stewardship through science-based
education, has designed a day to get students (K-5) and staff from Lincoln
Elementary outside, enjoying outdoor learning adventures. They will spend the
day in nature participating in activities such as rock wall climbing, painting
an environmental mural, gardening, conducting water ecology and physics
experiments and creating lots of mayhem, that's Macroinvertebrate
Mayhem!
Partners that have helped create
this opportunity include: Catamount Institute, City of Colorado
Springs, The Rock Climbing Center,
Cheyenne Mountain Zoomobile, Cool Science, and Pikes Peak
Permaculture.
The event at Lincoln Elementary is
part of a host of events happening around town to celebrate "No Child Left
Inside Weekend" which will feature award-winning author Richard Louv. Louv's
national best-selling book, "Last Child in the Woods," has sparked a growing
movement against "nature-deficit disorder" in kids over-saturated by video games
and TV. Louv is the recipient of the prestigious 2008 Audubon Medal for his
efforts to get more children out into nature and brings his provocative message
to the Pikes PeakCenter in
Colorado
Springs.
"An Evening With Richard Louv" on
Friday, October 3,
2008 will begin in the
Pikes PeakCenter when
the doors open at 5:30 pm. Over
25 exhibitors will be there with informational booths about the weekend
activities and their programs for connecting children with nature and the
outdoors. The presentation will begin at 7:00
pm with book signings after the
program in Studio B. His book will be available for purchase with some copies
pre-signed.
