Catamount Institute received a $10,000 gift from Intel Corporation to
support the Young Environmental Stewards (YES) program – an innovative
after-school and summer camp program presented to 4th-12th graders in
Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and Woodland Park. YES builds
tomorrow’s leaders today, teaching underserved and minority youth about
the world around them in unique ways by combining ecology,
conservation, technology and community leadership.
Throughout each 15-week semester, Young Environmental Stewards experience field excursions to the region’s natural and cultural treasures, community service learning projects, hands-on investigations and experiments, and computer and technology instruction at the Urban League’s Digital Learning Center. An overarching goal of the YES program is to help students understand the connection between themselves and the world around them as they study the importance of diversity in our human and natural communities. The Young Environmental Stewards program was presented the Environmental Education Award for Excellence for Best New Program in 2002 by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education and received an El Pomar Award of Excellence in the Environment in 2002. The program currently serves about 100 local youth each year, and for many YES students, this is their first opportunity to experience the unique natural areas within our community. This is an exciting time in the life of the Catamount Institute. With strong community support, like that of Intel Corporation, Catamount Institute is poised to become one of Colorado’s—and the nation’s—premiere environmental educational organizations. The Catamount Institute was founded in 1997 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring ecological stewardship.
