Catamount Institute’s Young Environmental Stewards after-school program
planted native plants on the Manitou Elementary School grounds as part
of their community service project.
Led by Nancy Slowik, Catamount Institute’s Environmental Educator, the
4th and 5th grade Young Environmental Stewards (YES) students organized
a school bake sale to raise money to purchase plants for their garden
project. The YES project was made possible with generous assistance
from Rick’s Garden Center, Good Earth Garden Center, and Rocky Top
Resources who donated both plants and soil amendments. Throughout the
15-week semester, YES students learn about conservation, ecology,
leadership, and technology. The YES program strives to encourage
stewardship of the Earth and create strong community ties through
service. The Young Environmental Stewards program was presented the
Environmental Education Award for Excellence for Best New Program in
2002 by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education. Catamount
Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring
environmental stewardship through leadership and education.
