We invite you to join us in proclaiming the weekend of October 3-5,
2008, as "No Child Left Inside Weekend" in the Pikes Peak region. This
weekend of activities is sponsored by the Friends of the Florissant
Fossil Beds, National Park Service Intermountain Region, Florissant
Fossil Beds National Mon7ument, Catamount Institute, Colorado College,
Colorado Spate Parks, Pikes Peak Chapter of the Sierra Club, American
Camp Association, Teller County Public Health, Sanborn Western Camps,
and School in the Woods (D20) to increase public awareness of the
importance of nature and outside activity in the growth and development
of our children. The weekend of activities will begin at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs at 7pm on October 3, 2008, with a presentation by Richard Louv, followed by outdoor activities for children and families scheduled throughout the region during Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the 10/3 presentation are available at the Pikes Peak Center and World Arena box offices: $10 for adults, $7 for educators and $5 for students. You can also order through Tickets West (719) 520-SHOW or online for an additional $2 per ticket service charge. Richard Louv, an internationally-known author and speaker, has captured the nation's attention with his book, "The Last Child in the Woods." He is not alone in his belief that today's youth suffer from what he terms "nature deficit disorder." Many agencies, organizations and individuals have also developed initiatives to foster getting children outside. The realization that children are no longer experiencing the benefits of outdoor activity is recognized as being detrimental to their physical and mental growth and development, and as a primary determinant of their longevity and quality of life.
